Presentation Skills Training: What Surfing Taught Me About Learning to Present

There I was, surfing the Taghazout waves of Morocco. Effortlessly balancing on my board, feeling the thrill of riding the waves. Moving with the water beneath me.
The bay was surrounded by massive rocks. I felt on top of the world. Fully in the moment. Energised. Alive. Nothing compares to that feeling. The reward of several days of focused training with my surf teacher Mehdi.
Was I like that in the beginning? NO.
Was it a matter of trying it a few times? NO.
Could I have achieved this level myself?
Yes, but surely not in a week. And maybe I would have quitted halfway… Not getting to this stage at all, getting frustrated and tired by not getting the progress I was looking for.
I realized that achieving this skill, that felt like true bliss, was due to 1 thing.
Me doing the work ;-), and following up the specific advice from Medhi, who watched me intensely, every ride.
“Good job, but next time put your feet flat.”
“Now put your feet more diagonally”.
“Now go through your knees a bit more”.
“Put your hands more backwards on the board”
“Pull your chest up more”.
With each piece of advice, immediately following up, I felt more balanced. Surfing became easier and became so much fun.
No longer, I was holding my board in a tight grip. Trying to go too fast, getting ahead of myself. Which only resulted in draining a lot of energy, frustration and bad results!
And this is the same for presenting. Have grip, but do not hang on too tightly. Do not go beyond yourself and do the work.
Do you want to learn to ride the presentation waves and have fun and quick results?
Do you want a teacher to help you getting there faster with the right techniques?
I will be happy to be your Medhi 😉
